What is social distancing?


Social distancing or keeping a physical distance of 2 meters or 6 feet with people who don’t live with you in the same house. Social distancing has proved very effective in preventing transmission of coronavirus infection from person to person.
Most evidence suggests the transmission of virus through droplets from the infected person to a healthy person. Covid-19 infection spreads in people who come in close contact with an infected person or with a person who carries the virus with no symptoms.
Social distancing along with the other precautions can minimize covid-19 transmission and thus reduce the number of new cases of coronavirus in the community.
Maintaining distance in public places like markets, shops, offices, and banks is very important in limiting the spread of disease.

Why social distancing is required?


The main objective of controlling and fighting coronavirus is to minimize the number of new cases, which is only possible by adopting preventive measures. Social distancing with proper use of face masks and washing hands can be a game-changer in the control of covid-19 transmission.
The Covid-19 is a very infectious virus and is rapidly spreading from one person to the other. Avoiding close contact reduces the risk of virus transmission in the form of droplets from the mouth or nose of an infected person to a healthy person.
Many countries around the world who have effectively practiced social distancing along with other preventive measures achieved better control on virus spread.

Simple Measures in public places to implement Social Distancing



  • Firstly, be prepared. During the Covid-19 times, simple tasks like shopping, visiting a bank, or an office may take a longer time. So be patient and do not try to rush unnecessarily.

  • Public places should use stickers on the floors and walls to guide the visitors to keep distance from other persons in the queue. These low-cost interventions are good for public awareness, changing behavior, social pressure, and public compliance.

  • Public transport passengers – wear masks keep distance as much as possible. Keep faces in opposite directions.

  • Malls, shops, public places should not allow more than 25% of the people inside.

  • Malls and public places must provide printed instructions in the form of posters, stickers, and handouts so that visitors are ready and care about themselves and others.

  • Keeping distance in mosques and religious places

  • Maintain contact with loved ones or family members who do not live with you through social media. No doubt, we all need family and friends support in this difficult time.

  • Staff should serve clients quickly
